Design 2 Midterm: Momentum Generation Movie Poster Redesign

For my Design 2 class midterm project, I was tasked with redesigning one of my favorite movie posters in the style of my choice. I chose the film Momentum Generation, a documentary about a group of friends who dominated the surfing world in the ’90s. I took inspiration from ’90s album cover art from bands like Blink-182 that the group used to revolutionize surf films at the time. The initial poster depicts the crew as the ages when the film was shot, but I used an iconic picture discussed in the film as my reference photo that I thought encapsulated the movie’s message. I loosely traced the image using the ’90s punk rock style and created a fitting background in front of the beach at sunset and various surfboards. I traced and recolored all the relevant logos and stickers I chose to add to their clothing and boards and drew little bubbles with each character’s name, personalized with a unique font and redesigned clipart. I also redesigned and embedded all the relevant logos and information for the billing block. The incredibly detailed piece has hundreds of layers that took dozens of hours of tedious work to perfect. Below is more information and imagery on the work and my process.
